How to use Haptic audio on ROG Phone 5

What is Haptic audio? Haptic audio is an advanced function which can turn important sound effects in the game into vibration. Available on ROG Phone 5 Ultimate (ZS673KS) and ROG Phone 5 (ZS673KS).  Players can turn specific sounds (such as gunshots) into vibration when they touch specific areas to enhance the game's sense of presence. Launch a game, then swipe in from the left edge of the phone to call out Game Genie > Tap Haptic audio icon.

In the current version of Haptic audio, it supports two zones. If you want to set two touch zones, you can set the toggles for both zones to the on position, and adjust the size range of the touch zones by the slide bar below. The touch zones are presented in a circle and can be moved to specific positions on the game screen. For example, set the circle on the fire button, to achieve vibration for gunshots.

ROG Phone 5 launch for 10th March

At the start of February we reported on sources pointing to a March/ April launch for the Asus ROG Phone 5. Just ahead of the weekend Asus cast doubts aside (over the naming and launch date) revealing an official countdown page for this premium gaming phone. So, yes it is going to be the Asus ROG Phone 5, skipping the v4 for cultural / superstitious reasons (is Apple going to be worried about the iPhone 13?). This is slightly earlier than most were expecting, even the leaksters. It is more typical for Asus to launch a new gen ROG Phone in the summer.

You can see the official ROG Phone 5 countdown page here, and there is a Twitter teaser too, with a video, but it is hardly worth checking out as it doesn't provide more information of substance just a short video animation. Nevertheless, I have embedded the video below for your convenience.

The launch / unveil event takes place at 7pm Taiwan time, 11am GMT, on Wednesday 10th March. This is going to be an online event, and you can watch it via the countdown page at the time stated. It will also probably be available to watch via social media channels.

There are expected to be two versions of the Asus ROG Phone 5, a premium version which will for the first time cost approx US$1,000, and a less elaborate and less expensive option available to deliver the core experience. Otherwise, specs you can look forward to include: Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 8 to 16 GB of RAM 6.78-inch AMOLED screen Triple rear cameras 5G support 6,000mAh battery with 65W charging Asus promises to release or tease more information about the ROG Phone 5 between now and launch.

Asus looks for smartphone boost with ROG Phone 5, ZenFone Mini

Asus launched the ROG Phone II and III in July of 2019 and 2020, respectively. However, industry sources are pointing towards a launch for the ROG Phone 5 this March/ April. Furthermore, there is talk of the firm testing the market with a ZenFone Mini later in the year. Both the new ROG Phone and compact premium device are attempts by Asus to turn around its smartphone business this year.

According to DigiTimes, Asus shipped fewer than expected devices in 2020. We all know laptops and larger screened devices have sold well during the Covid-19 pandemic but mobile devices in general haven't fared so well, at least for Asus (Apple has no complaints). Asus insiders also grumbled about shortages of major device components.

Asus smartphone income generation has been broken down to show the relative performance of older models and its latest models. According to the source older smartphones generated NT$0.5 billion in profit in Q4 2020, while the newer devices didn't do so well, precipitating a net loss of NT$1.23 billion. (1 billion NT$ = 26 million GB£)

As well as accelerating the rollout of the new ROG Phone to March/April, there is talk that it will be somewhat more expensive than its predecessors. Previous ROG Phones have been firmly under the US$1,000 line, but it looks like Asus is preparing to break this barrier with the Qualcomm Snapdragon 888 powered device coming in a few weeks time. Yes, 888 is a lucky number in Chinese culture, while Asus seems to have skipped the ROG Phone 4 due to tetraphobia.

Previous leaks of ROG Phone 5 features have been in the news in recent weeks. One particularly interesting one is that it will feature an 'AniMe Matrix' display on the back, carrying over the idea/style from the ROG Zephyrus G14 laptop.

There isn't much information about the Asus ZenFone Mini. A Japanese Asus fan blog reckons that the upcoming Mini will be just one of the new ZenFone 8 models coming later in the year. Like Apple's iPhone 12 Mini the device should appeal to those wanting to minimise the pocket payload of their mobile phone, without having to resort to a feature phone or much older device. However, one warning light for Asus is that in the Apple iPhone models sales mix as we ended 2020, the Mini seems to be the least favoured of all.
